Mary SPURR

John HOWARD    before 1643 ~ born about 1624 in England; married Margaret Hayward about 1646 at probably Duxbury, MA; died 1700 at Bridgewater, MA.

From Kingman's History of North Bridgewater, "John and James Howard, brothers, came from England and settled in Duxbury. John removed from thence to the West Parish of Bridgewater, and became one of the first settlers of the town, in 1651. (James went to Bermuda.) When a lad, it is said John lived in Captain Miles Standish's family. He was a man of great influence in the new plantation, and was one of the first military officers in Bridgewater. Previous to 1700 the name was commonly written Haward, but during the last century it is spelled Howard. The names of Howard and Hayward are often confounded, and by many are pronounced alike. They may have been the same name originally, although John always wrote it Haward, without any 'y'."

He was a carpenter and later an innkeeper.

Martha HAYWARD ~ born about 1630, possibly at Aylesford, Kent, England; she probably died at Bridgewater.

Research note: There are many Howards in the cemetery at the corner of Ashland Street and Main Street in Brockton, MA. I was unable to gain access to the cemetery in May, 1997 to photograph stones.

James KEITH    1662 ~ born 1644 in Scotland; married (1) Susanna Edson May 3, 1668 probably at Bridgewater, MA; he married (2) Mary (Macey) Williams, widow of Thomas Williams (see Spencer A8) about 1707.  He died Jul 23, 1719 at Bridgewater.

From Kingman's History of North Bridgewater, "Rev. James Keith came from Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1662, at the age of 18. He was the first ordained minister in Bridgewater, having been ordained in Feb. 1664. ... died at West Bridgewater ... after a pastorate of 56 years. From this family has sprung a large and respectable list of descendants, which are scattered over every portion of the country. It is said that in 1810 there were 200 bearing the name of Keith in the town of Bridgewater, which included what is now (1866) North, East, West, and South Bridgewater."

From Savage, Vol. 3:  "KEITH, JAMES, first minister of Bridgewater, bred at one of the colleges in Aberdeen, came about 1662, was ordained early in 1664, when he was under 21 years. (Died) about 23 July 1719, in 76th year. In the solemn induction a part was born by Reverend Increase Mather, perhaps the youngest minister in the assembly; yet in the Magn. III. 4, with heedlessness, strange even in Cotton Mather, his third class is, 'of such ministers as came over to New England after the reestablishment of the Episcopal church government,' in England among all the veterans is crowd. in our Keith; who might be less, could not be more than 18 years. Ever honored should be his name for opposition to the design of putting to death the child of King Philip."

Richard WILLIAMS    before 1639 ~ born Jan 28, 1606/07, probably at Glamorganshire, Wales; married (1) Jane Shepheard of which nothing more is known.  He married (2) Frances Deighton Feb 11, 1631/32 at Wooten-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England; died Sep 15, 1693 probably at Taunton, MA.

(2) Frances DEIGHTON    before 1639 ~ born 1610 probably at Somersetshire, England; died Aug 1693 probably at Taunton.  This surname is also seen as "Dighton" and her husband named the town of Dighton, MA after her.  Frances is a well-documented "gateway" ancestor whose ancestry has been traced to Charlemagne.  One of her descendants (and a distant cousin of ours) is General Douglas Macarthur.
