SPENCER - born about 1818, possibly in Connecticut. John's
birth date is based on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. His death
record gives Killingly, CT as his place of birth but I could find no
record of a Spencer birth in Killingly, CT prior to 1842. He
married Avis S. Northup probably about 1838-1842, probably Rhode
Island though no confirming record has been uncovered yet. He
died Jan 31, 1881 at Boston, MA from gangrene of the leg.
John was a harness-maker and leather merchant. Avis S. NORTHUP - born May 31, 1816 probably at Newport, RI. This information is based on her death record and has not been confirmed by other records. A preliminary query to Newport, RI produced no results, nor does she appear in the multi-volume set of Rhode Island vital records. She died Oct 13, 1893 at Boston, MA from "heart disease" and her burial place is also unknown. Her full name may have been Avis Slocum Northup, possibly after the Avis Slocum who married Gideon Northup in 1751. Gideon and Avis could possibly be her grandparents though I have not been able to confirm this. Another interesting slant on her name is that her son John's death record gives his mother's name as Avis Worthing! I have found no evidence of a remarriage between 1881 and 1893 so this remains a curious little puzzle. She gave her occupation as "electropathist" in 1860. I have been unable to find more about this term. CHILDREN: Agnes Estelle, John Elvin Research Note - An interesting research project would be to look for listings of his business in Boston directories 1860-1880. Their burial places may be recorded in Boston death records. |

Shepard WOOD - my favorite "mystery man". In all
the records about him, he is referred to only as "Shepard
Wood" or "H. Shepard Wood". The most likely
candidates for his first name are Henry or Horatio. I think
Henry is the most likely based on his paternal grandfather's name and
his last son's name. He may have been named for grandfathers
Henry Wood and Shepard Wood. He was born about 1829-1830 at
Stoughtonham, MA (now Sharon) and was a boot maker. He married
Rachel Maria Whiting Dec 1, 1850 at Boston, MA, possibly an elopement
since they both lived in Stoughton, MA in the Whiting household at the
time of the 1850 census. He apparently died after 1900 as I find
no record of his death before then. His burial place is unknown
but may be Stoughton, MA.
Rachel Maria WHITING - born Nov 20, 1835 at Stoughton, MA; died sometime after 1900, probably in Stoughton. CHILDREN: Alexander Ellis, Rachel Alice, John Lyman, Walter Clayton, Silas Frank, Sarah Adeline and Henry Shepard. Alexander was born at Randolph, MA; Rachel at Hanover, MA; the rest at Stoughton, MA. Research Note - A visit to the Stoughton Town Hall might produce more information on his first name, and the death dates and burial info. |

HOWARD - born Mar 27, 1823 at North Bridgewater (later Brockton),
MA; married Elisa Ann Wood Apr 4, 1852 at Braintree, MA. He died
Apr 23, 1900 at Randolph, MA and is buried in Central Cemetery,
Randolph. His daughter Maria is buried nearby (she died at age
24 in 1882).
Albert was a boot maker and can be found at Braintree in the 1850 census, living in his father's household.
Elisa Ann WOOD - born 1834 at Braintree; died 1904 at Randolph where she is buried in Central Cemetery with her husband and daughter. Her first name appears as both Elisa and Eliza.
CHILDREN: Elisa A., Alice, Maria, Sarah Jane, Cora Belle, Francis S. Research Note - More research at Braintree and Randolph is need to pin down Elisa's birth and death dates. |
