SPENCER ~ born
Apr 16, 1849 at Boston, MA;
he married Ellen Henry Jun 17,1880 at Boston; died Dec 17, 1927 at
the state hospital in Taunton, MA and is buried in Union Cemetery,
Holbrook,
MA. John was an artist and illustrator and may have lived in both
Boston and Holbrook. His address at the time of his death is given
as Vining Street in Holbrook although he actually spent the year before his
death at Taunton State Hospital. Norfolk County probate records
have several documents regarding John's commitment to Taunton State
Hospital. It appears he may have been in and out of the hospital
more than once between 1892 and his death in 1927. His mental
health problems seem to have been alcohol and money-related. Ellen HENRY ~ born about 1856-1857 probably at Somerville, MA; died Jan 4, 1924 at the state hospital in Taunton and is also buried in Union Cemetery, Holbrook. Ellen had been at Taunton State Hospital for the thirteen years prior to her death, suffering from depression and paranoia. CHILDREN: Frederick John Elvin, Charles Edmund Research Note - I am not aware of any pictures of this couple. If any exist they would be nice addition here. I did not find their graves in a visit to the cemetery in May 1997. Perhaps they can be located in a future visit. |

Clayton WOOD ~ born Jun 11, 1861 at Stoughton, MA; married Cora Belle
Howard Sep 6, 1884 at Randolph, MA. He was a shoemaker and the
family lived in Holbrook. Walter died May 8, 1911 at Braintree, MA
and is buried in Central Cemetery, Randolph.
Cora Belle HOWARD ~ born Jan 27, 1866 at Randolph; died Jul 3, 1948 at Holbrook at the age of 82! She also is buried in Central Cemetery. Research by Edith (Spencer) Woodward suggests Cora's wealthy parents were not happy with her marriage to Walter (he apparently not being of the same social class) and may have disowned her after the marriage. CHILDREN: Edna F., Walter Emerson, Herman E., Elsie Ann, Robert Arthur, Eva Agnes, Gladys May, Lester Albert, Raymond F., Norman Douglas Research Note - I did not find their graves in a visit to the cemetery in May 1997. Perhaps they can be located in a future visit. |
